JIM ADAMS

Miacis Gracilis

64 MILLION YEARS AGO

AFTER ANTHONY FRISCIA graduated from college, he didn’t know what to do with his life. He went to his undergraduate advisor for advice. “Come play in the dirt for a month and see if you like paleontology,” the advisor replied.

Friscia spent that month in northeast Utah, digging up mammals from the Eocene Period (56–34 million years ago). His advisor studied primates from the period, but Friscia was far more interested in the carnivores that ate the primates. He went on to get a Ph.D. in paleontology, writing his dissertation on how the carnivore community changed through the Eocene. Today he teaches at UCLA, wearing a tattoo of one of those carnivores, the weasel-like Miacis gracilis.
